It’s amazing to think that the Violet Carpenter Bee is not a thing of fantasy, these incredibly beautiful, luscious dark bees have reflective violet wings. Now just try to pronounce their Latin name: Xylocopa Violacea! They are a large bee, up to 3cm long and have an impressive buzz.
Due to climate change, they have now arrived in the UK from Southern Europe and the first one was spotted in Leicestershire in 2007. They are however still extremely rare due to a lack of suitable nesting sites, so it’s a real sign of luck to see one. The name “carpenter bee” is derived from the fact they nest in rotting wood.
This beautiful embroidery features Violet at the centre surrounded by this species' favourite flowers including purple thistles. This design plays with some wonderful embroidery techniques from the tassel stitch to raised chain stitches. Finished with a piece of luxury violet velvet ribbon to hang.
Size: 7-inch embroidery hoop.
