Both of my grandfathers fought and served in the airforce for our country in the second world war. They both had important jobs and told me stories about some of their time spent during the war when I was a child. Showing me their medals and black and white photos of the aeroplanes one flew and one fixed. Those stories felt like make believe, a world that seemed a million miles away. As an adult I realise now those days are never a million miles away.

YOU WILL NEED
Red and black yarn
Crochet needle size 4.5
2.5cm-3cm Brooch Back
Scissors
Darning need
Glue Gun
ABBREVIATIONS UK TERMS
Double crochet (dc) – insert hook, yarn over once, pull through one, yarn over pull through the two remaining stitches.
Treble Crochet (tr) – yarn over once, insert hook, yarn over pull through one, yarn over pull through two, yarn over pull through the remaining two stitches.
Double Treble Crochet (dtr) – yarn over twice, insert hook, yarn over once, pull though. Yarn over once, pull through two, yarn over once, pull through two, yarn over once, pull through the remaining two.
Chain (ch)
Slip stitch (ss)
PATTERN
Round one
Create a slip knot.
Slip knot
Ch 4, ss together through first chain.
Round two
10dc into the centre of the circle. Ss into first stitch to join round together.
Round three – the first petal.
Ch 2
1 tr into the first stitch
2 tr into the next stitch
2 dtr into next stitch
2 tr next stitch
1 tr , into the next stitch, then ch 2, ss into the same stitch.
Repeat for the second petal:
Ch 2
1 tr into the first stitch
2 tr into the next stitch
2 dtr into next stitch
2 tr next stitch
1 tr and chain 2, next stitch, ss into the same stitch. Cast off
To create the centre of the poppy
Using the black yarn.
Slip knot
Ch 4, ss together through first chain.
Round two
10dc into the centre of the circle, ss into the first stitch. Cast off
CREATING THE BROOCH
Using a darning needle stitch the ends of the yarn back into the work and trim.
To attach the black circular centre of the poppy, add a little blob of hot glue gun glue to the back and press down into the middle of the flower.
Add some glue to the flat section of the brooch back and attach horizontally to the back of the flower.
